Postcards from Istanbul: The Mosques
There are more than three thousand of them scattered around the city, and they definitely add to Istanbul’s charm. They are imposing, well-kept, and well-lit, of various sizes and with different numbers of minarets depending on the economic capacity and status of those who had them built. Most of them are of Ottoman architecture or inspired by it, and they are a hymn to harmony, proportion, and elegance.
I had never been inside a mosque before, and as fate would have it, my baptism was in one of the most beautiful and emblematic in the city of Istanbul—the Blue Mosque. Imposing on the outside, it is dazzling on the inside. Its name comes from the thousands of beautiful blue Iznik mosaics that devour its interior and give it a unique atmosphere.”
