Switzerland Postcards: Geneve
The founders called it a “city of refuge”, visitors call it “the world’s smallest metropolis”. The names complement each other. Nestled between the Jura Mountains and Lake Geneva, with a privileged view of the icy peaks of the French Alps, Geneva is a small ‘big city’ where you hear a different language on every corner, either because it is the capital of world diplomacy in Europe or because successive waves of Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Lebanese, Turkish and Kosovar emigrants have chosen it as their privileged destination (a quarter of the Swiss population is made up of emigrants). All this diversity lives in peace and harmony, in a super-organized way and with a tranquillity very unusual in cosmopolitan cities. Public transport is omnipresent, as are bicycles and, between parks and lakeside gardens, there is no shortage of places to enjoy the common urban space.
The city’s ex-libris is the Jet d’Eau, which shoots water from the lake about 140 meters high.
